The Complete Guide to Float Trips on the Upper Meramec River at Blue Springs Ranch

Resort Amenities

If you have been searching for the perfect Meramec River float trips experience, you are in the right place. The Upper Meramec River is one of Missouri’s most scenic and accessible waterways, winding through the Ozark hills with gentle currents that welcome everyone from first-time floaters to seasoned paddlers. At Blue Springs Ranch, we have been helping families, friend groups, and adventurers of all ages enjoy this stretch of river since 1988.
Whether you are planning a laid-back afternoon on an innertube or a full-day canoe adventure, this guide covers everything you need to know. We will walk you through trip options, watercraft choices, what to bring, safety tips, and how to make the most of your time on the water.
Why the Upper Meramec River Is Perfect for Floating
The Upper Meramec River holds a Level 1 classification, which is the calmest category on the international scale of river difficulty. That means no whitewater rapids, no dangerous drops, and no prior paddling experience required. According to American Whitewater, Level 1 rivers feature easy-moving water with small waves and few obstructions — ideal conditions for a relaxing day on the river.
So what does that actually mean for you? It means you can bring the kids, load up a cooler, and spend the day floating through some of the most beautiful scenery the Missouri Ozarks have to offer. Towering bluffs, dense hardwood forests, and clear spring-fed water create a backdrop that makes every float trip feel like a getaway — even though you are only about an hour from St. Louis.
The Ozark Scenery You Will Float Through
The stretch of river at Blue Springs Ranch takes you through a section of the Ozarks that feels worlds away from city life. You will spot:
Limestone bluffs rising above the tree line
Gravel bars perfect for stopping and wading
Wooded shorelines filled with oak, hickory, and sycamore
Wildlife including great blue herons, kingfishers, turtles, and the occasional deer at the water’s edge
The Upper Meramec stays relatively uncrowded compared to more heavily trafficked sections downstream, which means you get a more peaceful, natural experience.
Two Trip Options: 5-Mile vs. 10-Mile Float
At Blue Springs Ranch, we offer two float trip routes on the Upper Meramec. Both launch from our property and are fully supported with shuttle service, so you do not need to worry about logistics.
The 5-Mile Float
This is our most popular option, especially for families with younger children and first-time floaters. The 5-mile trip gives you a solid taste of the river without turning it into an all-day commitment.
Duration: Approximately 2 to 3 hours depending on water level and pace
Best for: Families, beginners, and anyone who wants a relaxed half-day on the water
Difficulty: Easy — gentle current does most of the work for you
The 10-Mile Float
If you want to spend more time on the water and see more of the Upper Meramec, the 10-mile trip doubles the adventure. This route takes you through longer stretches of scenic river with more gravel bars for stopping along the way.
Duration: Approximately 4 to 6 hours depending on water level, stops, and pace
Best for: Experienced floaters, friend groups, and anyone who wants a full-day river experience
Difficulty: Easy to moderate — still Level 1 water, but the longer distance requires more stamina

Watercraft Options: Choosing the Right Ride
One of the best things about Meramec River float trips at Blue Springs Ranch is the variety of watercraft we offer. Your choice of vessel shapes the entire experience, so it is worth thinking about what fits your group best.
Canoes
Canoes are the classic choice for a reason. They are stable, easy to steer, and hold enough gear for a full day on the water. Canoes typically seat two adults and can accommodate a small child in the middle.
Best for: Couples, small families, and anyone who wants a traditional float trip experience.
Single Kayaks
If you prefer to go solo and set your own pace, a kayak is the way to go. They are lighter and more maneuverable than canoes, making them fun for paddlers who want a bit more control.
Best for: Solo floaters, experienced paddlers, and those who like to move at their own speed.
Innertubes
Nothing says “lazy river day” like kicking back in an innertube. Tubes require zero paddling — just lean back and let the current carry you. We also have cooler tubes so your drinks stay within arm’s reach.
Best for: Casual floaters, friend groups, and anyone who wants maximum relaxation.
Rafts (4-Man, 6-Man, 8-Man, and 10-Man)
Rafts are the go-to choice for larger groups who want to float together. They keep everyone in one vessel, which makes for great conversation and group fun on the water. We offer raft sizes to accommodate groups from 4 to 10 people.
Best for: Large friend groups, family reunions, corporate outings, and bachelor or bachelorette parties.

What Your Float Trip Looks Like Start to Finish
Wondering what to expect on the day of your float trip? Here is a step-by-step look at how the experience works at Blue Springs Ranch.
Check in at the front office. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your launch time. Our staff will get you signed in, answer any questions, and go over basic safety guidelines.
Gear up. Grab your life jackets (provided for all guests), secure your belongings in a dry bag, and load up your cooler.
Shuttle to the put-in point. We handle all transportation. Our shuttle takes you upstream to the launch site — you do not need to drive anywhere.
Launch and float. Hit the water and enjoy. The current does most of the work, though canoe and kayak paddlers will steer to navigate the gentle bends.
Stop at gravel bars. Take breaks along the way to wade, skip rocks, have a snack, or just stretch your legs.
Take out at Blue Springs Ranch. Your float trip ends right back at our property. Walk up from the river, and you are steps away from the rest of the resort.
The fact that you end your float trip at the ranch means you can spend the rest of your day swimming in the pool, grabbing food at the general store, or heading to your cabin or campsite. It is an all-in-one experience you will not find at most outfitters.
Best Time of Season to Float the Meramec
Our float trip season runs from April 15 through October 31, and different parts of the season offer different experiences.
Early Season (April 15 – May)
Spring brings higher water levels from seasonal rainfall. The river moves a bit faster, and the scenery is lush and green. Water temperatures are cooler, so dress in layers and be prepared for chillier mornings. This is a great time if you prefer fewer crowds.
Peak Season (June – August)
Summer is the most popular time for Meramec River float trips, and for good reason. Water temperatures are warm, the days are long, and the weather is ideal for spending all day on the river. Weekends fill up fast during peak season, so we recommend booking ahead through our online reservation system.
Late Season (September – October 31)
Fall floating is an underrated gem. The Ozark foliage begins to turn in late September, and by October, you are floating through tunnels of orange, red, and gold. Crowds thin out, water temperatures are still comfortable, and the scenery is spectacular.
What to Bring on Your Float Trip
Packing the right gear makes a big difference. Here is what we recommend bringing on your Meramec River float trip.
The Essentials
Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher, waterproof)
Water and plenty of it — staying hydrated on the river is essential
Snacks and a packed lunch for longer trips
A dry bag or waterproof container for phones, keys, and wallets
Water shoes or sport sandals with straps (you will be walking on gravel bars)
Sunglasses with a retainer strap so they do not end up at the bottom of the river
A hat for sun protection
Nice to Have
A small cooler (we offer cooler tubes to float alongside you)
A waterproof phone case
A lightweight towel
A change of clothes for after the trip
A waterproof camera or GoPro to capture the scenery
What NOT to Bring
Glass containers — glass is prohibited on the river for safety reasons
Valuables you cannot afford to lose — the river will claim anything that is not secured
Heavy or bulky items that weigh down your watercraft
Flip-flops or open-back shoes — they will come off in the water; wear shoes that strap on
Styrofoam coolers — they break apart and create litter
Safety Guidelines for Floating the Meramec
While the Upper Meramec is a calm, beginner-friendly river, it is still a natural waterway that deserves respect. Following basic safety guidelines keeps the experience enjoyable for everyone.
Life Jackets
We provide U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets for every guest. Missouri law requires children 6 and under to wear a life jacket at all times on the water. We strongly recommend that all floaters wear their life jackets, regardless of swimming ability.
Alcohol and the River
If you choose to bring alcoholic beverages on your float trip, please do so responsibly. Missouri law prohibits open containers of alcohol in vehicles, including the shuttle. Drink in moderation on the water — alcohol and sun exposure amplify each other, and impaired judgment on a river is never a good idea.
River Awareness
Stay aware of your surroundings, especially around bends and fallen trees (known as “strainers”)
Keep an eye on the weather — if you hear thunder or see lightning, get off the water and seek shelter immediately
Stay together as a group; do not let members of your party drift too far apart
If your watercraft capsizes, stay calm, hold onto your vessel, and float feet-first downstream until you can safely reach shallow water
Respecting the Environment
The Meramec River ecosystem is a treasure worth protecting. The Missouri Department of Conservation works to preserve rivers and wildlife across the state, and we all play a part. Pack out everything you bring in, avoid disturbing wildlife, and leave the river cleaner than you found it.
